TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD 50TH ANNIVERSARY

This week end was the celebration in Monroeville for the 50th anniversary of "To Kill A Mockinbird" written by Miss Harper Lee.Even if you have never read the book I'm sure you have heard about it.
The events were from Friday night thru Sunday..we didn't get to go on Friday night and it poured rain all day on Saturday so we made sure we drove over there today.
Isn't his a nice looking gift shop? I Love going in here and there are many items made by local artists and lots of other goodies made by the local community and surrounding areas.
Here is some of what we saw today This is the front of the court house and it has many stories to tell since the court room was right upstairs
I just Love Fountains and Murals too so had to get a picture to share of this one

There was such a huge crowd listening to the elementary school singing that I couldn't get any closer to get a better picture

I think this was a Choir and they also sang some Beautiful Songs

This is just one of the what I call plaques telling a little about Monroeville,Alabama.

And there are many more interesting plaques under the Beautiful Trees with even more information

Then of Course they ended the day with an Ice Cream Social and who doesn't like an Ice Cream Cone on a Warm and Sunny Day
Here is my Ice Cream cone..Mint Chocolate Chip and I had to eat it quick before it melted...It was so Good

They also had a nice newspaper with all kinds of information about the event and the one artical that really caught my eye was the one about Alice Finch Lee (Harper Lees Sister) and it just amazed me that this 98 year old Woman still practices law in a Law office in town.
One of the important highlights of Miss Alice's life was receiving the "Maude McLure Kelly Award" at the Woman's Session of the Alabama Bar Association in 2003. And after hearing the Qualifications of Kelly, it was obvious that Lee had some "big shoes" to fill.
She was the first woman to graduate from the University of Alabama School of Law, the first woman to practice law in Alabama, the first woman from the Southern states to be permitted to practice and to argue a case before the U S Supreme Court. Lee is the second recipient of this award.
So now you know about 2 women both name "Lee" that have made a difference in Monroeville.
My Husband remembers as a young Boy going with his Aunt (who was a friend of Harper Lee) to visit this Famous Writer...even though that was before she wrote "To Kill A Mockingbird"
If you would like to know more about what a wonderful place full of things to do and see this summer go to their web site

I am reading this book right now and I read about the birdhouses that have been put up in our Sunday Paper. I would love to come drive down one day and just look around small towns, I love doing that!
